I'll be honest...
I have fallen behind with some of my blogging/journal-ing so now I intend to annoy you all by uploading things which were probably a long time ago! Please forgive me!...
I LOVE old cars ads...
I LOVE old car ads...
I was browsing for images of old cars, (not really sure why!) but I came across these brilliant magazine/newspaper ads. I love how VW still stick to a very similar style of advertising and the ads, especially for this particular car, all maintain a cheeky and light hearted style. When looking at similar adverts from this time you can really see how much it set them apart from the others.

I love this more recent Beetle ad, you don't need to see the car to know what it is, I love the... almost arrogance of VW by printing the miniscule logo in the corner. Again its a huge contrast to other car adverts which are very much in your face and all about the power and technology of the product.

IKEA...
When I first read this brief which was to design a campaign to advertise the 2011 IKEA catalogue I thought that it would be a really fun brief to answer. Little did i know how difficult it was going to be! Until I started researching the company's visual identity I had no idea of the sheer number of previous adverts that had been created. Every time I felt that I had an interesting idea I later found out that it had already been designed.
After many different visual experiments I created a series of posters which were made up of construction elements often included in IKEA furniture packaging. I designed these images with the thought in mind that they could be used in posters and hand outs as well as billboards and magazine adverts.

When I began looking for a competition brief to answer this one stood out to me straight away. It was to design an advertising campaign to highlight the dangers of underage drinking to 8-17 year olds. I thought that this would be really interesting and a big challenge especially considering the vast age range that the campaign was aimed at.
I experimented with many different ideas throughout the project but I kept finding that the ideas were only relating to one half of the age group. After asking many people who were included in the age range I came to the conclusion that the most successful way of appealing to the entire age group was to look at technology, in particular games.
As the brief stated that the campaign must not include shocking images I chose to look at retro 80's games such as pacman, tetris and space invaders.
This led me to creating this booklet which would be mailed to the target audience which highlighted the dangers of drinking but not in an obvious way. I chose to make a maze book as I felt it successfully related to the notion of losing control when drinking and quite literally making the recipient 'lost' within the book.

On the reverse of the book was a poster which again took a similar format to the games that I had been researching. I designed a game which was impossible to complete, again it enforces the message that excessive drinking can lead to you losing control and becoming lost. It also highlights the message that underage drinking has a strong correlation with academic failure.

I designed the visual style of this campaign with the intention that it could be extended to cover many different types of media. A teaser campaign could be created to accompany the direct mailers simply using the phrase "game over." I considered that this teaser campaign would be successful as it would make the target audience feel included in the campaign and almost like they knew the secret as to what the billboards were relating to.

Snow...
As cliched as it may be I couldn't resist going out and taking photos while were all snowed in!

I finally worked out the Macro lens on my camera!

Silence. Amnesty International...
After experimenting with numerous techniques and crafting several enormous speech bubbles I think it is finally finished!
I wanted to convey the message that a lack of freedom of speech leads to censoring the individual's identity. This led me to produce the following posters:

After having designed these posters I began to experiment with how this idea could be adapted to appeal to more people. I did this by photographing different people in different settings and using my images in different formats. This led me to design a booklet which could be handed out to enforce the message.
